Oceans Will Rise is the third album by

Montreal band The Stills. In late 2007, Toronto, Canada-based record label Arts & Crafts signed the band to a worldwide recording deal. Once again working with producer Gus van Go, The Stills’ new material, beginning with the anthemic lead single, “Being Here,” conveys a rejuvenated, reinvigorated sense of being. According to vocalist Tim Fletcher, the group felt “a raw energy of inspiration” during the new album’s recording efforts that was absent in previous sessions. “The Stills are back back back!” - NME.com

Velvet Underground & Nico-Velvet Underground & Nico-PREORDER-$ 14.82

Back in 2008 with the reissue of the classic debut album from 1967 on 180g gatefold vinyl. At Warhol’s insistence, Nico sang with the band on three songs of their debut album, The Velvet Underground and Nico. The album was recorded primarily in Scepter Studios in NYC. The album cover was famous for its Warhol design: a bright yellow banana with ‘Peel slowly and see’ printed near a perforated tab. Those who did remove the banana skin found a pink, peeled banana beneath. This gimmick would later be repeated on the cover of one of several Velvet Underground boxed sets, also titled Peel Slowly and See, released in 1995.

That Lucky Old Sun is an album by Brian Wilson released in 2008 through Capitol Records. Originally commissioned by the Southbank Centre for its 2007 opening season, the work was debuted in a series of concerts at the Royal Festival Hall in

London, England during September 2007. In January 2008 it was also performed at the State Theatre in

Sydney, Australia for the Sydney Festival. The album was written in collaboration with Van Dyke Parks (previous collaborator on SMiLE) and

Wilson bandmate Scott Bennett.

Wilson describes the album as “consisting of five ’rounds’, with interspersed spoken word”. Its main theme is celebration of life in

Southern California, harking back to the themes of

Wilson’s earlier work with The Beach Boys.

Originally released in 1986 this is actually a collection of 12″ singles and songs dating back as far as 1982, the year that the absolute stone classic, “Planet Rock” 12″ was released. One of the most important singles in the history of Hip Hop, it incorporates elements of Kraftwerk’s “Trans Europe Express” and he is the first documented use of an 808 drum machine in Hip Hop/ R&B.

Bauhaus, In the Flat Field, PRE-ORDER, $21.56
US only LP in its original form with the un-airbrushed sleeve and inner bag. Bauhaus is an English band (formed in Northampton in 1978) popular in the 1980s. The band took their name from the German Bauhaus art movement, originally going by the name Bauhaus 1919, dropping the latter portion within a year of the band’s formation. Bauhaus combined a number of influences (Punk, Glam Rock, Funk, and Dub), to create a gloomy, but very passionate sound which appealed to many looking for something new after punk. Bauhaus first broke up in 1983. Peter Murphy began a solo career while the other members continued as Tones on Tail and, later, Love and Rockets. Both enjoyed greater commercial success in the United States than Bauhaus had, but disappeared from the charts in their homeland.

Bodies of Water is a band from the Highland Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, California, signed to independent record label Secretly Canadian. The core group consists of married couple David and Meredith Metcalf (playing guitar and keyboards, respectively), drummer Jessie Conklin, and bass guitarist Kyle Gladden. However, the band often plays LA shows with five or more additional musicians, including producer Adam Siegel on guitar, as well as horn players, an additional drummer, and strings. All members of the band sing, including players added for local shows.

Double-LP pressing on heavyweight vinyl. In 1972, David Bowie set out on his first US tour. He’d recently introduced the world to his Ziggy Stardust persona with his top 5 album ‘The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars’ and had completed a hugely successful UK tour. The Santa Monica concert, David’s first live US radio broadcast, was aired live on KMET in L.A. Over the last 36 years this historic recording has only been occasionally available as a bootleg. For many, ownership of this concert was regarded as a true test of being a ‘proper Bowie fan’. This powerful, galvanizing show allows a more than 70 minute glimpse into the earliest nationwide live radio exposure granted David and the Spiders. The set list is compiled primarily from the ‘Hunky Dory’ and ‘Ziggy Stardust’ albums.

Billy Bragg, Mr. Love & Justice, AVAILABLE, $16.38
The 12-track album produced by Grant Showbiz, features Bragg’s band The Blokes, comprising the celebrated Ian McLagan (of Small Faces, Dylan, Faces & Rolling Stones) on Hammond organ & piano, Ben Mandelson (lap steel guitar & bouzouki); Lu Edmonds (electric guitar & vocals); Martyn Barker (drums) and Simon Edwards (bass). They are joined by the legendary Robert Wyatt, the guest vocalist the track `I Keep Faith’ recorded in So. Thoresby, Lincolnshire. The collaboration came about when Bragg, in search of fresh rhubarb for a crumble, was in nearby Louth where he met Wyatt who lives in the town. “I hadn’t seen him since Red Wedge (the 1986 Labour Party youth vote initiative),” says Bragg. “He found me some rhubarb & then came along to the recording session and sang beautiful vocals to the chorus of `I Keep Faith’ it was like angels singing!”

The South London producer is notoriously shy of press and public performances yet his last two albums on Kode 9’s Hyperdub label have established him as one of the global leaders in this exploding scene on word-of-mouth alone. The 2008 DJ Kicks from Four Tet, Henrik Schwarz, Booka Shade and Hot Chip have all pushed new limits in eclecticism, making linear genre-specific DJ mixes a thing of past… so who knows where Burial will take it next.

Give Me Vinyl Review: Alkaline Trio Agony and Irony

What I like about Alkaline Trio’s latest is (and you may think I’m old for saying this) is that you can understand the words. Though their lyrics are not Shakespeare and at times seem random, I like that I can sing along with them. Agony and Irony is a heartbreak album from start to finish. Lots of angst and anger here–I especially love this lyric from In Vein: “Do you recognize this shape? It’s the back of your hand. You paste it on my face here again & again”. Love that and can totally relate.

Musically, there may not be enough punk for me as they have evolved from being a raw and loud band to one that is more polished and contemplative. I like it a little more fast and furious, which is why I especially liked “Calling All Skeletons” and “Lost and Rendered”. Sorry if it sounds contradictory–I think you can have a frenetic punk sound and still have great, distinguishable lyrics.

The suicide song “Over And Out” could have been very cheesy and overdone, but I think it was well played. Seems as if they understand the emotion that drives you to the edge, but at the end they encourage anyone thinking in this direction to “never lose hope”. For someone who respects Alkaline Trio, this may work.

The Trio released their first two albums with indie label Asian Man Records and then joined Vagrant Records in 2001. Over the past decade, Alkaline Trio’s sounds and lyrics have evolved from raw, loud, and uninhibited as to refined, poetic and profound as heard on their last release, Crimson. The album was produced by Josh Abraham (Staind, Korn) and features the lead single ‘Help Me’.
